The origin of this carving, like many others, goes back to when we use to do the Common Ground Fair. We have not been doing shows for several years but sometimes the designs feel like they need to be done again. This little ear of corn should speak for itself, being a Thanksgiving symbol for Plenty. Corn was so important in early America both with Native Americans and later with the English settlers. It is unfortunate that the proliferation of GMO corn has become something of a controversy, with the rise of massive agribusiness and the creation of so many byproducts. The long and important history of this valuable food source has been lost. Forgive this humble plant for what it has developed into, and think of it as it was meant to be...a reliable source of sustenance. And think of it as a non-GMO variety. |
