|People often ask where we get our visual ideas. The Lifelines series is loosely based on the lines and ridges that are the individual landscapes of our palms. Like the palms of our hands, each carving is unique. |
Gerry began this series in the winter of 2013-14. For him the contours represent the paths we have chosen, the hills and valleys we have crossed and, hopefully, the lessons learned along the way.
With this in mind, Gerry has named each carving with a short phrase meant to impart a small wisdom.
They are, of course, chosen from his own 'lifelines'. Each phrase is meant to encourage the wearer to explore a deeper level in their own lives.
As an artist Gerry is a keen observer of the world. So on one level, this is about seeing the world, literally. But on another level it is about opening up your eyes and being more aware of your life instead moving through it without paying attention.
