|The Ichthys symbol is recognized today as a symbol of Christianity, though it actually predates Christ. It is believed that the symbol was a way for early Christians to identify each other and to know of safe meeting places. In reading about the symbol, we found it interesting that it came back into use in the 1970's when many young Americans and Australians were very distrustful because of the Vietnam war period. The modern history of the Ichthys makes for interesting reading. |
We came to do this carving because a customer asked if we could make it. The one he showed us was inlaid and not one we wanted to do. But it did make us do a test of the carving to see if we liked it. Some forms are more elegant because of their simplicity. That is very true of the Ichthys.
