Winter in Maine is REAL winter. None of this stuff where traffic gets backed up for miles because of 2 inches of snow (and lots of people without snow tires.) We may get caught out on that first snow fall but we in Maine are ready for winter. We start stacking the fire wood in July and we have the storm windows in place by early October. And winters are long in Maine, sometimes starting as early as mid November and dragging on until late March (which is part of the reason we live in New Zealand from Dec. to May). But in January we often have this weird warm weather. The temperatures climb and everything starts melting. Icicles drip off the eves of houses and porch railings. January thaw is like a little late Christmas gift. Everyone gets a burst of energy and can't be kept inside. Such a celebration of such a simple joy deserved a simple little carving.. a bone icicle to help us remember to enjoy those little gifts nature gives us. This tiny icicle is to remind us that when life sends us adversity, we cope with it.
