Design #72a

Kokopelli is one of the more easily recognized of the Southwest Indian demi-spirits. Known as the flute player, he was reputed to be the harbinger of the harvest and, by association, of fertility. He was one of many spirits from several competing tribes in an area of diminishing resources.

Belief was that spirits inhabited the natural world and had the power to influence events, so any spirit who could help feed and repopulate the tribe would be held in high regard.

Anyone who has heard the contemporary flute playing of this area of the southwest and listened to the fall winds, winding their way through the canyons, caves and arroyos knows the flute player is still plying his trade.
